The Tipping Point in Stewardship
In his book, The Tipping Point, author Malcolm Gladwell writes about the point at which certain trends catch on and becomes pandemic. He describes the rise of certain kinds of teen footwear, suicide, and smoking and the decline of crime, teen pregnancy, and certain diseases. On this Sunday, beginning of our annual canvass, we will be hearing about the tipping point as it relates to stewardship in our congregation. This is a case when the word "pandemic" has a positive connotation for all of us and for our congregation. Everybody wins!

Temperance
Perusing his Who's Who of UUs book over the years, the inquisitive Rev. has made a curious observation. Unitarians and Universalists were leaders in the temperance movement. Unitarian Controversy
The Unitarians were stuck in the 19th century between literalism and symbolism. Today, we find ourselves stuck too--between social action and social club--between reason and passion--between hibernation and participation. The story from the past will speak to the story of today and remind us that our work for justice and love is ever-evolving but ongoing! Are we willing to change for and with the times to get the world we want?

How a Liberal Can Speak Truth To Evil
Liberals are often accused of having nothing to say to evil because they do not recognize original sin - but the reality can be just the opposite. However, We need to be able to be persistent, focused, and value-oriented if we want to speak truth to evil.

What I Want To Be When I Grow Up
Most of us probably remember times when, as children, we had dreams about what we would be when we grew up. Then, when we became adults, we may have settled for jobs that were simply ways to support ourselves but not fulfill ourselves. On this Sunday, we will talk about finding vocations that make our hearts sing and express who we really are. As your minister, I have found just such a vocation; and I'd like to share my insights with you.

The Village
If you haven't seen this movie, rent it and watch it before the sermon OR listen to my version of it. Religion and other beliefs comfort and protect, but what are the risks of learning what's outside "the village"; learning what is beyond one's brand of faith or beyond one's understandings? Is ignorance bliss?

Time Shifting
Today marks the beginning of Daylight Savings Time, so set your clocks forward and join us in contemplating various facets of time. For kids, time seems to slow down in anticipation of birthdays or other special events; it slows in an emergency, when all senses focus on the immediate action. Yet a month goes by in a flash; evolution is measured in eons; computers operate in nanoseconds; Zen meditation focuses on the present moment. Let's look at our relationship to time.
Rev. Kathleen Ellis Live Oak Unitarian Universalist Church, Cedar Park (Austin), TX 04/02/2006
To Dwell Together in Peace
Our communal religious life is centered upon sharing of our true selves with one another and being enriched by our commonalities and differences. For this to be possible, a religious community must be a place of respect, trust and safety, where the expectations of how we interact with one another are clearly understood.
