Love Begets Love: The Doctrine of Universal Salvation The Rev. Roberta Finkelstein South Church - the Unitarian Universalist Church of Portsmouth, NH 11/26/2006
Religion for the Rest of (U)Us
It's that time of the year when our thoughts have focused on beginnings, ancestry, ties to our past and how that past has shaped our present and future. This morning I will share some thoughts about these ideas as they relate to our ways of faith, especially that half of our faith that few remember to name or understand.

Radical Hospitality
Growing up, we learned that we were not to talk with strangers and to be wary of those people whom we did not know. But we are adults now, and many of us are still holding on to those notions. Maybe it is time for us to look at the ways in which we can welcome strangers in our lives and in our country. We might just find that strangers are simply people whom we have yet to meet. Indeed, we could find a world of opportunities for growth and enlightenment.

And There Are Griefs So Still None Knows How Deep They Lie
The title is taken from a line in May Sarton's poem, "Of Grief." In that poem Ms Sarton describes some of the ways we experience grief. In the midst of the holiday season we may be surprised by an encounter with grief, or it may be that grief usually accompanies us through this time. How do we meet our own grief or the grief of those for whom we care?

A Brotherhood of Man
With all the violence and strife in the world, from the events of September 11, 2001, the wars and the violence, to the religious and political issues that divides us all, it's hard to imagine a "brotherhood of man,"? the brotherhood and sisterhood that unites all humanity. In our U.U. principles we promote the "inherent worth and dignity of every person,"? the "the goal of world community,"? and the "Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part."? "A Brotherhood of man"? is about the way in which we are all connected, we are all family, brothers and sisters on this Earth.

The Costly Heritage We Claim
We gather together as a free faith, intentionally forming a community of goodwill. Our UU congregations are direct descendants of the centuries-old "free church" tradition — and it has both nothing and everything to do with our modern liberal religion. In claiming our heritage we explain what it really means to be a member of a free religious community, and the potential for that community to reshape society.
